I don't know if you have seen the news on the Children's Health Insurance Bill that Bush veto'd. But it seems like a really stupid thing to Veto. I have been reading a new blog started on some other blogs I like to read.

So let's break this down. Here's what this veto means (with thanks to MomsRising and the John Edwards camp for getting the word out quickly.)

This morning the president vetoed a bill to provide funding for the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). As a result, 6.6 million children could lose health care coverage beginning November 16 and millions more who need health care coverage won't get it at all. With his veto, the president ignored bi-partisan support in congress and the overwhelming support of the American people.

RALLY FOR CHILDREN'S HEALTH CARE TOMORROW: Tomorrow evening, October 4th, MomsRising members are invited to join local rallies around the nation to protest the president's veto and to call for Congress to overturn it by the required 2/3 majority vote. In the Senate, there are enough votes to overturn the veto, but in the House, which votes first, we need about 20 more votes. • 12% of American Children don't have any insurance coverage at all
• The U.S. Ranks 37th in the world for infant mortality
• One-in-five U.S. jobs does not provide health insurance, a pension, or wages high enough to support a family
• For a family of 4, one year of health insurance costs an average of 11,000
• Over 1/2 of all bankruptcy filings in 2001 were a result of medical expenses

John Edwards released the following statement following President Bush's veto of legislation that would provide health coverage for 4 million uninsured children:

"Today, we have witnessed a President that has turned his back on health care for children. Not surprisingly, in George Bush's administration, corporate cronies and insurance industry allies always come first, while children's health care comes last. In an America where nearly 9 million children don't have health coverage, Congress must do what is right and fight for these children and override Bush's cruel veto.
"Even more shocking is that Republican Presidential candidates, including Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney are all lining up with President Bush and against health care for our children. Instead of threatening the health care of children, it's time for Bush, and Republicans like McCain, Giuliani, and Romney to start picking on someone their own size."
